Highlights & Features

The Norseman 447 stands as one of Robert Perry’s most respected bluewater cruising designs, built by the Ta Shing yard in Taiwan from 1980 through 1988 as an aft cockpit or center cockpit bluewater cruiser. A long distance voyager with a build standard that remains a reference point for the era.

Overview

Design and Construction

Topaz has been updated with a new dodger and bimini, new electric toilets, and numerous other upgrades. She is in the water in Rockport Harbor, ME, and her mooring is available for the duration of the season.

Perry’s collaboration with Ta Shing produced a solid GRP hull laid up by hand and reinforced with a massive internal grid that absorbs mast and keel loads a solid GRP hull reinforced with a massive internal grid system. The defining underbody is a modified fin keel with a skeg-hung rudder, a configuration that pairs windward ability with protected steering gear. Because the lead ballast is encapsulated within the keel stub, the structural vulnerability commonly called “keel smile” is markedly reduced. Above the waterline, many 447s left the yard with thick teak decks screwed into the sub-deck, while interior joinery relies on solid teak and high-grade veneers to create a warm, secure cabin environment.

Rig and Handling

Most Norseman 447s were rigged as cutters, a versatile arrangement for varying wind strengths, with a total sail area of 1,008 square feet driving a hull whose Sail Area/Displacement ratio of 17.4 marks it as moderately powered rather than over-canvassed. The Ballast/Displacement ratio of 42.8 percent makes her exceptionally stiff, able to carry sail longer than lighter yachts, and the Displacement/Length ratio of 263 yields a stable, predictable motion. A Capsize Screening Formula of 1.71 sits well under the 2.0 offshore limit, and the Brewer Motion Comfort Ratio of 36.2 describes a gentle boat that spares the crew in rough water. Standing rigging is typically 1×19 stainless wire with mechanical Norseman terminals; the reusable terminals demand fresh wire and internal cones every 10 to 12 years for blue-water service. Under a well-maintained 50 to 70hp diesel, economical cruising runs 6.5 to 7.2 knots.

Accommodations

Topaz is the center-cockpit model and has a substantial master suite aft. The galley is typically U-shaped and set to port or starboard of the companionway, giving the cook a safe braced position underway. This boats carries over 150 gallons of water and 100 gallons of fuel, supporting extended self-sufficiency on passage.
